CSUEB Freshman Day of Service

On May 4, 2013,  as part of the Cal State East Bay Freshman Day of Service,  19 young adults volunteered half of a day at the Treeview Elementary Project Eat Nutrition Garden.   Overcoming the heat, the unrelenting temptation of their smart phones, and the purported lack of discipline attributed to students of their age, in a few hours the garden was transformed.  They mulched more than ½ a dozen fruit trees, moved two yards of woodchips, painted a dozen colorful garden signs, and prepared healthy tastings of pico de gallo, 50/50 (a mix of carbonated water and orange juice), and delicious veggie hummus tortilla wraps for lunch.  A few school families also contributed their efforts planting summer crops such as tomatoes, squash and eggplant as well as watering the garden.  Special thanks to: Esther Patterson, Americorps CHA; Malila Becton, Cooking Coordinator; and Esther de La Torre, Promotora, all of whom contributed in guiding the students.
